About Organisation

Who are we?

Harrow Carers is an independent voluntary organisation and the lead carers support agency in Harrow since 1996. We have developed a network of services and support for adult and young carers to reduce the burden of care and increase life chances. Our services are offered to anyone who provides support for people in the community who are ill, frail, disabled and disadvantaged in many ways.

Who is a Young Carer?

A young carer is a young person aged up to 17 who is providing unpaid care for a person that an adult would normally provide, that has a physical or mental health problem including autism, dementia and learning disabilities, or is dependent due to age, substance misuse, long-term or terminal illness.

As a young carer, you can find helping someone very rewarding, but you also have the right to be looked after. If you are a young carer, find out what support you can access.

We support young carers in the following way:

• Secondary School outreach service offer month drop-ins to 10 secondary schools in Harrow.

• Young carers are invited to seasonal activities and outings.

• We offer extensive half term and summer activities programme. This included residential trips and expeditions as well as self-development opportunities.

We carry out young carers statutory assessments on behalf of the local authority so that all young carers have access to respite activities and receive the appropriate support relevant to their caring role.

We feel strongly about supporting young carers and their academic achievements and run 2 programmes of support across both primary and secondary schools which assist young carers to understand their caring role and how this may impact their on school years and their studies. Our nurture talk programme delivered in primary schools and DNAV programme delivered in senior schools helps young carers to regulate their emotions so that they are better able to cope with the demands of caring, school life and challenges they face.
