What

SLTH are pleased to launch our new bespoke education packages for individual young people who struggle to access mainstream education. These plans are designed to sit within the student’s wider educational offer, offering a break from school in an outdoor setting, learning new skills in practical ways, alongside horses. KS3 (Years 7-9) offer: Thursdays 10.00 am - 2.30 pm

KS3 (Years 7-9) Students with the following eligibility would find these sessions valuable:

  • Young people with a Personalised Education Plan
  • Home School Students
  • School Refusers
  • English as an Additional Language (EAL) students
  • LAC
  • NEET

Each programme has the following elements: Curriculum-linked learning and a range of qualifications to suit individual needs, including:

  • AQA Unit Awards;
  • Kings Trust Qualifications;
  • British Horse Society Changing Lives Through Horses Awards
  • British Horse Society Stage Qualifications.

The programme is designed by a qualified teacher and are bespoke to the needs of young people and where possible, young people are supported to join a group of other young people of a similar age and ability level.

How alternative education works

During education programmes, students are taught how to care for and train horses, including learning about horse psychology and similarities with human brains and behaviour. The horses pick up on the body language of the young people and give feedback on their behaviour and emotional state, helping them develop interpersonal skills. Our experienced staff uses the horses’ responses and structured, hands-on tasks around the yard to help students gain the life skills they need to pursue education, training, or employment.

Cost: £1,500 per 12-week term per person (1 day per week); £3,600 for the full academic year (20% discount)

For students with anxiety and SEMH needs, we offer 1-1 support, and there are opportunities to progress into the above groups when they feel confident. These sessions are £120 per 1.5 hours (can attend for 1.5 – 4.5 hours per day). Some bursary funding may be available.
