What
This therapeutic dance programme offers the opportunity to explore performance through a pioneering interdisciplinary approach, drawing on dance movement psychotherapy, dance, and education techniques.
The programme offers each children and young people with disabilities the opportunity to explore their experience of being in the world through creative expression, skill development and nurturing relationships.
By focusing on what the students can do the groups will work to create a collaborative piece that will demonstrate their resilience and strength which reflects the reality of their life's obstacles, whilst also working on individual targets and strategies.
This project is designed to achieve a myriad of goals, each aimed at fostering personal growth, community engagement, and artistic expression. Our overarching project aims include:
- Increased Physical Activity: Through the exhilarating art of dance, participants will experience the joy of movement, promoting physical well-being and active lifestyles.
- Positive Creative Relationships: By collaborating with peers in a supportive and inclusive environment, participants will cultivate positive relationships, fostering teamwork, empathy, and self-expression.
- Confidence Building: Through weekly dance practice and performance opportunities, participants will develop confidence in their abilities as performers, unlocking their full potential on stage and beyond.
- Skill Development: Participants will hone their dance skills by co-creating a dance piece, and exploring movement, technique, and artistic expression under the guidance of experienced facilitators, trained in Dance Movement Psychotherapy.
- Community Performance: Engaging in a culminating performance for the community provides participants with a platform to showcase their talents, fostering a sense of pride and connection within the broader community.
- Highlighting Individual Strengths: Each dance performance will be tailored to highlight the unique strengths and abilities of individual groups, celebrating diversity and inclusion.
- Accessible Performing Arts Opportunities: By offering accessible and inclusive dance programs, we aim to engage young people in Harrow with enriching opportunities to explore the performing arts, regardless of background or ability.
- New Approach to Dance Performance: We seek to introduce the wider disabled community in Harrow to a fresh approach to dance performance, breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity through the universal language of movement and expression.
Through these overarching aims, our project strives to create a vibrant and inclusive community where dance catalyses personal growth, connection, and artistic exploration.
This activity is fully booked. If you are a school let us know your interest for the future.
Support the Arts Funding Programme
The vision of this programme is to involve all communities in arts and culture and to give those children and young people who are not engaging in performing arts the voice and power to help shape local arts provision. This programme is possible with the funding support of John Lyon's charity, Harrow School, the Voluntary Action Harrow (VAH) networks and the Harrow Culture Forum.
