What

Supporting BAME Autism parents and carers on their parenting journey

Do you have parents from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME), who are experiencing difficulties with parenting a child with Autism or SEND? Are they struggling to adjust to a new diagnosis or discussions about Autism? We offer a free taster session (1 hour) with BAME parents at the school where we will explore the common issues or challenges they’re experiencing and help them feel more inclusive and integrated into school culture.

We have a special collaboration with Reena Anand to help schools support their BAME parent community. Reena is an Autism parent; Consultant, Speaker, Writer & Trainer; Lawyer & former Ombudsman; Chair of Governors & Inclusion Governor at a local Harrow school; Co-production board member at Aubilities & Trustee at the Race Equality Foundation. Her mission is to promote honest conversations about Autism, especially within Black, Brown and ethnically diverse communities. She is passionate about recognising cultural and personal biases, stigmas and misconceptions and supporting families, organisations, and communities on their journey to understand Autism and how to talk about it courageously.

Popular topics include:

  • supporting your child when they’re highly anxious or demonstrating difficulty in self-regulation
  • how to build a supportive family environment when you have an autistic child
  • explaining autism to wider family members and your ethnic community
  • managing sibling relationships
  • the importance of self-care as part of your parenting repertoire
  • working with your partner to ensure a consistent parenting approach
  • effecting good triangulation between home and school so your child thrives
  • tips to travel and go out when you have an autistic child
  • understanding how our parenting influences how we parent our children – and how to adapt this
  • tips to prepare your child for change

Topics chosen will reflect the interests and needs of the cohort.

Cost of the 6 week package: £399 (minimum 6 parents- Normal price: £540)
