What
The Breaking Down Barriers programme is a one-year, hands-on experience designed for young people who already have some horse-handling experience and want to take the next step. You will gain a Level 3 Certificate in Horse Care & Management and the British Horse Society's Stage 1 Care Award giving you the opportunity to take the next step toward a career with horses.
Here’s what you’ll get

Hands-on training: Spend one day a week working directly with horses at SLTH.
Professional skills: Learn how to look after horses independently in riding schools, yards, and other equine settings.

Industry experience: Visit racing yards, veterinary colleges, breeding farms, and equestrian colleges to see real-life horse care in action.

Structured learning: Complete 156 guided learning hours covering six core units, including horse welfare, transport, and health & safety.
Course fee: £200 sign-up fee, which is matched at the end of the course to give £400 to spend on equestrian equipment.
