What
Explore how shame impacts behaviour and learn practical, relational approaches to better support young people and families. Frontline professionals across youth work, education, social care and health regularly encounter shame—but often without the tools or language to respond effectively.
This powerful introductory session, delivered by The Violence Intervention Project (VIP), offers a deep dive into Shame-Informed Practice—an approach that strengthens relationships, builds trust, and improves engagement with young people and families.
Shame is often the unseen driver behind behaviours such as aggression, withdrawal, self-harm, and disengagement. Without recognising it, professionals can unintentionally reinforce cycles of disconnection. This training creates space to better understand these dynamics and respond in more restorative, relational ways.
In this session, you will explore:
- What shame is and how it operates in young people’s lives
- The impact of shame on behaviour, identity, and relationships
- How to recognise shame responses in yourself and others
- Practical, non-punitive approaches to support engagement and trust
Aligned with the Families First ethos, this session supports a shift from simply managing behaviour to understanding the emotional drivers beneath it—helping professionals build stronger, more compassionate connections. This is more than a training—it’s the foundation for cultural change across teams and systems.
