What
My Yard: Life and Work Experience for SEND Pupils gives young people aged 16+ the chance to gain real-life work experience, build confidence, and prepare for life after school. Many SEND pupils have limited opportunities to explore jobs, try different tasks, or understand what career paths suit them. This programme helps them discover their strengths, develop independence, and make informed choices about apprenticeships, further education, or work.
Over three terms in 2026, pupils will spend two hours each week at My Yard’s warehouse and hub in South Harrow, taking part in hands-on activities such as sorting, labelling, packing, creating posters, and serving customers. Alongside practical tasks, sessions cover essential life skills including travel, punctuality, health and safety, and understanding instructions. Pupils also develop teamwork, communication, and social skills through everyday workplace interactions, gaining confidence in a supportive, real-world environment.
The programme also includes taster work experiences during half term, giving pupils the chance to explore different roles and organisations before making longer-term decisions. Led by experienced youth workers and supported by Shaftesbury School staff, My Yard offers a safe, structured, and engaging space where SEND pupils can build skills, independence, and confidence, helping them take positive steps toward their future.
