What
The Harrow Horizons Enhanced School Service (ESS) offers mental health and well-being support to children and young people in participating schools across the borough. We work with those up to the age of 18 (or 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities) offering short to medium term therapeutic interventions, either individually or in small groups, for a range of issues, including:
Low mood and anxiety
Exam stress
Poor self-esteem / body image
Mild to moderate self-harm
Familial / relationship difficulties
Bereavement; and
Mild to moderate challenging behaviour as a result of SEND
We put children and young people at the heart of our work. Using a client-led, strengths-based approach, we aim to empower young people, offering strategies which increase resilience and everyday coping skills. By offering individualised advice and guidance to parents and schools, we are able to promote positive change for young people and their support networks.
Our experienced team of counsellors and psychotherapists incorporate a wide range of therapeutic techniques into client sessions, including:
Talking therapies
Art, drama and play therapy
Dance movement psychotherapy
Solution-focused therapy
Cognitive behavioural therapy; and
Parenting support
A typical intervention lasts between three and eight sessions, but participating schools are able to extend interventions based upon the young person’s needs. Follow-up support by way of signposting or onward referral is provided to both schools and families.
