What

“Harrow Steel” is a charity steel band. We were founded in 2019 and are based in the London Borough of Harrow. We create an ethos of challenge and nurture that provides an opportunity for gifted and talented young musicians aged 9 – 21 to learn complex music aurally within a Steel Band.

We welcome a variety of young people from a range of backgrounds. We aim to give these young people a sense of belonging, whilst teaching leadership skills and teamwork, which will stay with those in our community as they progress throughout their lives.

We offer 2 bands:

  • Senior Band - Wednesdays 5.00 pm - 7.30 pm at Whitmore High School
  • Junior Band - Saturdays 9.30 am - 10.30 am at Whitmore High School

I was a member of Harrow Steel for many years growing up. Thanks to it I had some of the best times of my life so I will always be grateful to Dexter and Sue for that! I would recommend any young person as it is a great community and you can learn so much and meet so many great people.

I was a member of Harrow Steel for many years and had an amazing time. We learnt to play countless songs, performed at many venues across London and met lifelong friends as well. It’s a great space for young people to spend time after school.

I was lucky enough to play with harrow steel all throughout high school and I have so many fond memories of my time here. This band was my introduction to such a wide variety of music as well as my introduction to performing and gigging. I later spent some time teaching at the junior band, and it was so incredible to see these kids go from total beginners to performing full songs in such a short space of time. I am now studying music and playing pan at university, and I know I would not be the musician I am today without everything I learnt in this band. The rehearsals and performances were always such welcoming environments and it’s always a joy to come back and play.

I loved my time with Harrow Steel Band!
Being part of the band was such a fun and memorable experience — everyone was so friendly and supportive, and the music always brought great energy. I learned so much and made amazing memories performing together. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves music and good vibes! 🎶🥁

Two of my children are currently in Harrow Steel.

They have enjoyed learning a new skill with other young people. They feel welcome and truly part of the band due to the lessons throughout the year, rehearsals and performances during the summer months.

The environment that the leadership promotes is friendly and encouraging.

My youngest can wait to join up!

The best music group ever! Being a member of Harrow Steel supported my growth into the person I am now in so many ways during my time in school. I now work full time in the music industry and can say the passion and knowledge instilled in me during my time in the band played such a large part in that. Thank you for the memories, creating an important third space for young people, and building my confidence in my musical ability!
