What

Managing a disclosure of sexual harassment, assault or abuse may be the most challenging conversation you have as a teacher. Be prepared with this course.

The aim of this course is to equip school staff with the skills and knowledge needed to confidently manage a student’s disclosure of sexual harassment or sexual assault or sexual abuse.

Ofsted’s review of sexual abuse told us that sexual harassment has become so commonplace in schools that young people don’t see the point in reporting incidents. If a young person chooses you as the person they trust with their disclosure, how you support them can have a profound impact on their lives.

This course will increase your confidence in recognising when a young person is making a disclosure and provide practical tips on how you should react and what questions you should ask.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Define a disclosure of sexual violence, harassment or assault
• Recognise different ways young people might respond to sexual harassment or assault
• Identify your statutory and ethical obligations towards reports of sexual harassment or assault
• Effectively support a young person who makes a disclosure, knowing how to talk to them in an empowering and trauma-informed way
• Accurately record and detail disclosures
• Understand how to respond to a disclosure alongside your school’s safeguarding procedures
• Identify where to find support after managing a disclosure.
