Background
Fulham Palace is a truly remarkable place. For centuries, this Grade I Listed building situated in extensive grounds by the River Thames was the country residence of the Bishops of London. The Palace is now managed by the Fulham Palace Trust, which is inspired by a vision to restore our nationally significant historic buildings and garden to their original beauty and to provide outstanding facilities for the local community and visitors from farther afield. In view of the climate emergency, Fulham Palace is enhancing its environmentally friendly practices and looking to increase biodiversity and wildlife on site even further.
Job Summary
The Saturday gardener will be required to assist in the practical skilled care, maintenance and development of the horticultural features and garden at Fulham Palace.
The Saturday gardener will be supervised and mentored by the senior gardener and other permanent gardeners who may work Saturdays. In house training will be provided covering all aspects of the role including garden maintenance and plant care.
This London based horticultural part-time Saturday job will provide a unique opportunity to be part of the weekend Fulham Palace garden team working alongside permanent garden staff and garden volunteers.
Working Pattern
The post holder will be required to work between 4 and 8 hours a day, between 07.30 am to 4.30pm on Saturdays only, 1-4 times a month.
The post holder will have 1hour unpaid lunch break each day and receive 28 days annual leave including bank holidays pro rata.
This post will provide a well-rounded horticultural experience tending to all garden areas at Fulham Palace. It will open up potential horticultural career opportunities such as the 18-month Fulham Palace apprenticeship, or other similar roles in other gardens and parks. This Saturday job will provide a taster experience to see if horticulture is the right kind of career for the post holder. It could open up training opportunities at the local Capel Manor college which covers many garden-based courses. Fulham Palace will be able to provide a reference and careers advice including what traineeships or positions are available in other organisations.
