Do you have the skills, knowledge, energy and enthusiasm to play a key role in helping children and young people in Harrow?

The Young Harrow Foundation is an exciting new organisation aiming to make a real difference to the lives of children and young people in Harrow. We are currently seeking a Treasurer with relevant skills and expertise to help us achieve our strategic goals.

Our mission is to ensure that every child and young person in Harrow is properly and effectively supported and safeguarded to enable them to reach their full potential and to access every opportunity available to make this happen.

Professional skills and knowledge required 

We are seeking candidates who are qualified accountants.

The overall role of the Treasurer would be to

  • monitor the financial administration of the charity and reporting to the board of trustees, in compliance with the governing document.
  • oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process;
  • act as a counter signatory on cheques and applications to funders; and
  • Board-level liaison with the external auditors on specific issues such as the Auditors’ Management Letter and the related board representations.

The Treasurer’s duties might include:

  • overseeing and presenting budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the board of trustees;
  • ensuring that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly invested and economically spent;
  • liaising with relevant members of staff;
  • chairing any finance committee and reporting back to the trustees;
  • monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity;
  • overseeing the implementation of and monitoring financial systems;
  • advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan

We are particularly keen to recruit trustees from black and minority ethnic background to reflect Harrow’s ethnic diversity. 

Personal skills required

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • A clear understanding of trustees’ governance role and responsibilities
  • Understanding of strategic financial management
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • A strong commitment to improving the lives of children and young people in Harrow
  • Personal integrity, independence of mind and a willingness to challenge and question
  • Commitment and capacity to attend Board and other trustee meetings as required and to engage actively in between Board meetings.
  • Energy and enthusiasm.


The Young Harrow Foundation is a registered charity and a member –led organisation. It was set up in 2015 and is funded for three years by the John Lyon’s Charity and City Bridge Trust. It aims to be a new model of local support for not for profit organisations working with children and young people in Harrow within a climate of increasing cuts in statutory funding and reduction in support for children and young people and increasing needs . YHF aims to develop and implement new ways for funders and not for profit organisations to develop in partnership more effective ways of supporting and delivering activities to meet the needs of children and young people in Harrow.

It is managed overall by a Board of trustees with a range of skills and experience and day to day by a CEO supported by three staff. Similar Foundations are being set up in the eight other local authority areas covered by John Lyon’s Charity. 

The Board meets about every two months at YHF’s office in Harrow. It also has an Awayday once a year can be held on a weeked. The trustee role is voluntary and non-remunerated. We will reimburse reasonable travel and similar direct expenses incurred to attend meetings.

Due diligence will be undertaken before the appointment of a trustee is confirmed. This includes DBS check, two character references and a signed declaration of eligibility and fitness to be a trustee.
