Coram Life Education Hillingdon
About Organisation
About us
We are an independent and self-supporting charity working in partnership with schools, nurseries, parents and the wider community to help children between the ages of 3 and 11 develop the ability to make positive informed choices through relationships, health, mental wellbeing, and drugs education. Coram Life Education Hillingdon helps schools fulfil their statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education (including the latest 2026 RSHE guidance) , children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development, and Ofsted inspection criteria for personal development, behaviour and welfare.
Why do we do it?
The wellbeing and health of our young people is the future of the Harrow community. Healthier, happier children do better in life and informed children are more likely to be able to manage their feelings and the risks they may encounter in the future, therefore taking responsibility for their own lives. Our young children are facing ever-increasing pressures and dangers that could damage their health- 1 in 6 children aged 7-16 now have a probable mental disorder (NHS Digital 2022) ; The proportion of children experimenting with vaping has grown by 50% year on year (ASH survey 2023) .
Where do we do it?
Coram Life Education Hillingdon serves schools and nurseries across the London Borough of Hillingdon and the surrounding areas (including parts of Harrow). In a normal year we reach over 10,000 children between the ages of 3 and 11.
How do we do it?
We visit each school in turn. We deliver fun, engaging informative programmes that equip children with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence to form positive healthy attitudes. During these workshops, children meet Harold, the giraffe puppet (‘Healthy Harold’) and other characters, have discussions and watch short films about healthy eating, drugs – legal and illegal – and their effects, the body and how it works, friendships and their influence, and how choices and behaviours can affect children’s health and education outcomes (both online and offline). Our work includes challenging social norms – misperceptions of peers’ engagement with risky behaviour – to engender more positive behaviours. There is also the opportunity to include in-depth learning about how the human brain works and how to translate this knowledge into positive action that supports mental wellbeing.
By visiting nurseries and primary schools year on year, building on the children’s existing knowledge, we ensure that young people can move on to secondary school, confident that they can make informed healthy lifestyle choices and resist pressures that could damage their physical or mental health.
