About Organisation

“Harrow Steel” was founded 1986 and has created an ethos of challenge and nurture that provides an opportunity for gifted and talented young musicians aged 13 – 21 to learn complex music aurally within a Steel Band. We support the engagement of musical talent, in a multicultural environment across Harrow and NW London.

Some of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and the band gives them a sense of belonging, whilst teaching leadership skills, team work, commitment and a skill for life.

We also ensure a high level musicianship is available for Gifted & Talented Musicians who would not normally be able to access this kind of provision due to financial constraints.

We extend enrichment activities for students of secondary school age range, particularly to provide opportunities for those on low income or eligible for Pupil Premium Grant.

We have successfully bid for charity status to extend our provision beyond that of able musicians and give young extremely vulnerable people in Harrow a chance to be part of an organization that has proven success in giving students a sense of belonging whilst learning a new art form, a musical skill, teamwork, responsibility, challenge and an extended family. This in turn will improve mental health and wellbeing whilst giving young people skills they need for employment.

In addition, we will promote inclusion within the London Borough of Harrow and its environment in the following ways:

  • Improve the quality of life by providing an Arts facility for young people with financial hardship.
  • Promote social inclusion for those between the ages of 14 – 21 who have poor educational skills or attainment, disability or who are excluded due to their ethnic origin or religion.
  • Provide a leisure time activity to improve conditions of life; develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
