Harrow Steel
About Organisation
“Harrow Steel” was founded 1986 and has created an ethos of challenge and nurture that provides an opportunity for gifted and talented young musicians aged 13 – 21 to learn complex music aurally within a Steel Band. We support the engagement of musical talent, in a multicultural environment across Harrow and NW London.
Some of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and the band gives them a sense of belonging, whilst teaching leadership skills, team work, commitment and a skill for life.
We also ensure a high level musicianship is available for Gifted & Talented Musicians who would not normally be able to access this kind of provision due to financial constraints.
At Harrow Steel, we are committed to:
- Improving the quality of life of service users by providing an Arts facility for young people to realise and develop their music ability; some of whom may not otherwise have been able to access this standard of provision
- Promoting social inclusion for those between the ages of 13 – 21 who may have difficulties in educational environments, low self-esteem, or be excluded due to their ethnic origin, race, sexuality, gender identity, disability or religion.
- Provide a leisure time activity to improve conditions of life; develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
- Celebrate a wide variety of cultures through the teaching and learning of a wealth of musical styles, sharing these with those in our local community and beyond.
