What

Objectives: To provide participants with an understanding of online ‘Hate Crime’ and ‘Hate Speech’ and how to use the Stop Hate UK Helpline services to report, seek support and further guidance.

What will be covered in the session

  • Online Hate Awareness
  • Online hate awareness – this session explores what we mean by online hate and ways to address this. This is delivered by our Online Hate Manager and will cover;
  • Details of Stop Hate UK and how people can get support
  • What we mean by online hate
  • Defining hate crime and hate speech online
  • Challenges of Online Hate
  • Role of the Online Team
  • Discussion of the Online Safety Bill and how to address online hate

Outcomes

  • Attendees will understand how opinions attitudes and prejudice are influenced and shaped by unconscious bias, media bias, and ‘fake new’s etc
  • Attendees will understand definitions of ‘Hate Crime’, ‘Hate Incident’ ‘Protected characteristics’ and ‘Hate Speech’ as they relate to the online space.
  • Attendees will understand the impact of online Hate Crime / Hate Speech upon individuals and communities
  • Attendees be able to identify appropriate responses to Hate Speech encountered online, via reporting, counter-messaging, counter-narrative, blocking etc.
  • Attendees will know how and where to seek further appropriate advice, support, and guidance
