What

Drama workshops for schools to help children & young people develop critical thinking & empathy skills.

WHAT IS DYCE?

DYCE Process Drama workshops give children & young people the opportunity to safely engage in a dialogue of empathy and critical thinking based on themes that acknowledge world events through fun & interactive drama activities led by trained facilitators.

WHAT IS PROCESS DRAMA?

Process drama is a method of teaching and learning where both the students and teacher are working in and out of role. It involves the group becoming part of a world where they are invited to take a walk in someone else’s shoes.

“…a task to be undertaken, a decision to be made, or a place to be explored.”

- Cecily O’Neil, Educator & Scholar

DYCE workshops are based on stories that are developed with young people at Brent Youth Theatre, ensuring the content is relevant to participants.

WHY NOW?

DYCE was developed as part of our 2021-22 artistic season during which young people explored real life stories of survival in times of turmoil. As part of the work we spoke extensively with participants, schools & local youth organisations about what would truly help the next generations cope with the extreme challenges we are facing as a society.

The biggest concerns our community raised were; feeling overwhelmed, lack of connection with others & powerlessness.

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE WORKSHOPS:

Hope Road (Years 4 - 11) - Drama workshop based on migration, political instability and the effects of social media.

Sports (Years 3-6) - Drama workshop exploring the pressures we feel to succeed and how to cope with failure.

The Supermarket (Year 6-13) - Drama workshop based on the challenges posed by the cost-of-living crisis. The workshops explores who is to blame, how we can navigate it and what behaviours people present as a result of it.

OUTCOMES:

Children & Young People accessing DYCE workshops have improved mental health.

Children & Young People accessing DYCE feel more connected with their community.

Children & Young People accessing DYCE feel more resilient in the face of challenging world events.

Things we need to know for a booking:

  • Date you would like the project to take place
  • How many classes you would like to take part in a day - we can spend a whole day at a school and can adapt the length of sessions depending on what would be most beneficial to participants. No more than 30 students per group.
  • We need a big empty space for the workshop.

We provide all materials for the session.
